Description
Piura Blanco cocoa is often characterised by delicate fruity notes such as red fruits, berries or plums. It can also have subtle floral notes, such as orange blossom or jasmine. It often has pleasant, sweet tones, sometimes reminiscent of caramel or vanilla. It also often has a smooth, creamy texture, which contributes to a pleasant sensation when consumed.
Piura Blanco cocoa is grown in the Alto Piura valley in northern Peru in front of around 5,000 farmers affiliated to the Norandino cooperative, which has been implementing a programme to rehabilitate the Piura variety since 2008. The small farmers cultivate a variety of cocoa bean, Piura Blanco, which has been meticulously selected and replanted over the past decades, pushing this special strain of cocoa away from near extinction. Piura cacao belongs to the ‘Nacional’ cacao genetic group, considered one of the oldest cacao varieties in the world, grown and consumed in a region where the borders of Peru and Ecuador have met for more than five years.
